NESTING SEASON
Courtship to eggs
Feb-March is courtship time in Northern Illinois. Our first eggs are seen by mid to late March. Once the clutch is nearly complete, incubation commences lasting just over a month.
Young in the Nest
Time spent in the nest - from hatching to fledging lasts on average 42-45 days. The perfect time for scientists to band the young is when they are 21-24 days old.
Fledging
A Peregrine's first flight (called "fledging") is generally a glide down from the nest site to a level in line with or below the nest site. Occasionally, a fledgling will make it all the way to the ground. We call this "grounding".
